Lake County Florida Bass Fishing

Phil Kelley with a Lake Eustis 8 pounderWelcome to Lake County Bass.  My first visit to this beautiful area of Florida came 50 years ago while on a family vacation.   I grew up in South Florida fishing canal bass with artificial lures when I was about 13 years old. I walked the banks with a Mitchell 300 spinning reel and  dreamed of fishing great places like this.  As a teenager, I had two main interests; bass fishing and my girlfriend Judy McGibbon who I met a week before her 16th birthday. Judy and I married right out of high school and this year we will celebrate our 47th wedding anniversary.  Many people who know Judy are surprised to find that she has fished many a He & She bass tournament. The truth is, she's a country girl at heart even though you wouldn't know it if you met her.

In the late sixties, competitive bass tournaments became popular and I fished every one I could enter.  Over the years I have won more than my share of tournaments, but I never considered becoming what we now call a "professional bass fisherman".  In those days being a "professional bass fisherman" was called "being broke!"

During my life, I have been lucky enough to fish all over the world.  Living in South Florida, I spent many years chasing Dolphin, Sailfish and Marlin in blue water and Tarpon, Snook and Redfish in the everglades.  I've fished all over the US, Mexico, South & Central America, Canada, Australia and even Papua New Guinea.  I always returned to bass fishing and these days I'm too old to be bouncing around the ocean.

I have been fishing Florida bass waters for over 50 years and the Harris Chain for nearly 40. The Harris Chain is one of the best places in Florida to catch a bass over 10 pounds.  These nutrient rich lakes are full of shad, golden shiners and blue gills, all feeding a good population of giant bass. Harris Chain bass are stocky footballs and hard fighters. It's not unusual to catch a 18" bass that weights over 6 pounds.

In 1996, we moved to the Golden Triangle and live in a house overlooking Lake Eustis.  Many people are attracted to our area because of the beautiful natural scenery, hills, lakes, golf and the weather.  For a bass fisherman, it's paradise!

Within a short drive from our home in Eustis are some of the best known bass fishing waters in the country.   The Harris Chain is literally right in our back yard. Rodman Reservoir, the St. Johns River and the Kissimmee Chain are all an hour or less away.  Hundreds of small lakes are full of hungry bass and our biggest problem is deciding which lake to fish on any given day.

We created this website to share these spots with you and hope you enjoy your visit and will return often.  I especially invite you to visit our Photo Gallery where pictures of bass, all caught and released in our area are displayed.
