The Harris Chain can be a very intimidating bass fishery. With
seven large interconnected lakes and over 50,000 acres of water, many
visiting anglers struggle to locate and catch fish. Add in substantial local and national tournament
fishing pressure coupled with the lack of visible structure, and you have a formula for frustration that causes many
anglers to throw in the towel and mark up our great bass fishing as a
hoax.
I
started offering these trips about 10 years ago as a gift to Judy's
lakefront home buyers. In
recent years, after numerous requests from non-customers I started
offering them on a day trip basis.
First, let me say that this trip is not a “Traditional Guided Bass
Fishing Trip”. As a former professional guide, I will tell you that
a professional guide's primary focus is always on catching fish. These days,
guides charge $350 and up for a day of fishing and their customers
expect to catch bass. This often means fishing with live shiners, which
practically guarantees at least a
fish or two even on a tough day. No guide that makes a
living fishing wants you to come back to the dock fishless. In
addition, many professional guides supplement their income by fishing
bass tournaments and are reluctant to disclose their spots to
competitors. If you are
looking for a traditional guided bass fishing trip, please call me and I
will be happy to recommend one of our great local professionals. Make it
very clear the type of fishing you wish to do and I will do my best to
hook you up with the right person.
On the other hand, if you are new to the lakes or bass fishing in
general and want to learn how and where to catch bass, this trip may
interest you. We will be fishing out of your boat and we practice catch
and release on artificial lures only.
The day
usually starts with the purchase of a Harris Chain map. You can buy
these maps at any of our local tackle stores for about $10. There is no
need for a pre-dawn start as Harris Chain bass don’t usually turn on
until after 9:00 AM. First, I spend about an hour going over each
lake individually. We discuss navigation, the seasons, tactics and finding out what type of fishing you like to
do. From there, I recommend a lake and we launch your boat at the ramp
nearest to the area we select. We will both fish and spend about ½ of
our time fishing and the other half exploring. I’ll show you where the
fish are and how they can be caught. I hold back nothing and encourage
my customers to mark their maps and take notes. I expect they will
return on their own and don’t have a problem answering any and all
questions. The day ends usually ends around 3-4 PM.
The cost for my time is $200 a day. The cost of a half day is the
same. You provide the boat and pay for any additional expenses.
Obviously I’m not making a living on these trips. I enjoy showing
people the great place where we live and play and I make a lot of new
friends We’ll have a great time and I guarantee at the end of the day
you’ll be happy you made the trip.
